Exciting times ahead for the Renown Group we are working with Northumbria University for an exciting KTP Project.

During the Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) with Northumbria University our KTP Associate (Lydia Chan) has been working very closely with the Renown Group. The aim is to develop a bespoke manufacturing platform for cladding and machining of steel/nickel super alloy stacks and to deliver an optimised process, enabling robust technology and high productivity for offshore marine parts under extreme environmental conditions.

The use of super alloys is significantly increasing particularly in aerospace, automotive and marine industries. These expensive super alloys are typically overlaid onto lower cost conventional materials formulating multi-layer stacks which principally require post processing to meet dimensional and/or quality requirements. Current machining technology of stacks comprising deposited nickel super alloy on thick steel plates is challenging due to the constrained cutting velocities hence the relative low productivity.

The proposed bespoke manufacturing platform aims to significantly improve the Renown Group’s capability and capacity to fabricate components for offshore marine applications in a timely manner and to a high standard.
